ABSTRACT

This, in turn, led to the hypothesis that if, indeed, endogenous electric fields generated by mechanical stress alter cell behavior and lead to Wolff ’s law of bone remodeling, then electrical signals applied from exogenous sources could also alter cell behavior. Thus, the search was on for clinical devices to treat fractures, bone fusions, osteoporosis, skin wounds, and degenerative joint disease; some of these studies have led to technologies in use today.
