ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to the basics of data warehousing. Since building data warehouses is closely related to the construction of database management systems (DBMSs), the chapter begins with a brief review of data management systems, covering issues from data modeling to query processing and transaction processing, as well as advanced database architecture. As for data warehousing itself, its architecture and related issues, such as data marts and metadata, are discussed. We also pay attention to related issues, such as online analytical processing (OLAP). A sketch of viewing data warehousing as materialized views and indexing are also provided.
