ABSTRACT

Audible sound is one of the human senses with which we are very familiar. Beyond that, we can also readily imagine the world of bats, cats, and dogs which use ultrasound and, with a little more difficulty, imagine sensing infrasound vibrations. In most cases, we use direct sound to communicate or detect something nearby rather than to sense any properties of the air around us. So what advantages does the use of sound have for investigating the atmosphere?
