ABSTRACT

An engineer who wishes to become an expert in manufacturing tribology has a difficult task. A multidisciplinary background is required for any tribological research, and this is compounded by the need to develop an appreciation of the multi-disciplinary nature of manufacturing processes. This chapter is intended only as a broad overview and introduction to the complexities of tribology in manufacturing. For readers who require additional information, they are directed to the classic manufacturing texts by Kalpakjian (1996), Kalpakjian et al. (2000), and Schey (1999), as well as the monograph on tribology in metal working by Schey (1984), which although published over 15 years ago is still the most valuable reference text in the field.
