This chapter reviews the subject of restoring dopamine levels in PD while employing a number of new therapeutic approaches that ease the conversion of levodopa to dopamine at the target region in the brain and facilitate the action of the amine at receptor sites. Main focus will concern the enzymes that affect levodopa catabolism (aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase and COMT) and dopamine oxidative metabolism (MAO).
