ABSTRACT

Designers who want to develop effective screen displays should concentrate on what is known about the users in terms of memory, perception, information processing, reaction times, visual capability and so on. Well-designed systems are likely to result in increased user satisfaction, greater usage of the system and improved performance and productivity. Retrieval of information from memory depends on the quality of the initial coding of the information and the subsequent organization of it when stored. The use of color not only adds interest to the display and makes it more interesting to work with, it can also be used to differentiate between separate pieces of information, particularly when spacing cannot be used instead and it can be used to identify relationships between items. Designing a display system that flows logically will increase the speed with which information is processed and the accuracy of the user’s response.
