ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 presented algorithms for the transformations of individual area features. In this chapter, the focus will shift to the transformation of a set of area features.

In this chapter, the first issue to be tackled is the simplification of the shapes of a set of contiguous area features, called a

polygonal network

in this text. This transformation only changes the appearance of individual area features if processed adequately. If it is not processed adequately, the topological relations may be altered as well. This issue will be discussed in Section 10.2.
