ABSTRACT

Algorithms are developed based on certain principles and theories. To facilitate the presentation of algorithms, a discussion of these principles and theories is provided in this chapter.

Scale

is a term not well defined yet. “Of all words that have some degree of specialised scientific meaning, ‘scale’ is one of the most ambiguous and overloaded” (Goodchild and Quattrochi, 1997). In different contexts, it may mean different things. To discuss the scale issues in spatial representation, it is necessary to conduct a discussion on the theory of scale.
