ABSTRACT

Asbestos has been known for centuries. The Romans used it in cremation cloths and lamp wicks, the Greeks also wove the material into cloth, and, in the Middle Ages, asbestos was used for insulating suits of armor. Asbestos was used because it is strong, insulates well, and resists fi re and corrosion (Browne and Murray, 1990; Ross and Nolan, 2003).
