During evolution, humans and other vertebrates developed a dense network of highly specialized
secretory cells, which were eventually fine-tuned to effectively synthesize, store, and release small,
diffusible chemical messenger molecules. These transmitters work for intercellular communication
and the associated control of physical and cognitive activities such as fine motor coordination, body
movement and balance, sensing, thinking, learning, and establishing memory.
