During evolution, humans and other vertebrates developed a dense network of highly specialized

secretory cells, which were eventually fine-tuned to effectively synthesize, store, and release small,

diffusible chemical messenger molecules. These transmitters work for intercellular communication

and the associated control of physical and cognitive activities such as fine motor coordination, body

movement and balance, sensing, thinking, learning, and establishing memory.
