During World War II, Switzerland built a number of fortresses to counter the threat of the German army. The fortress investigated in this case study was built inside a mountain on four levels, hosting 24 artillery guns, accommodation for personnel, and ammunition storage. It is accessible from the valley. The main entrance leads to a inclined tunnel with stairs and a cable car inside the mountain. When installing the cable car to connect the different levels of the fortress, little consideration was spent on the manpower required to operate the transport system and on its operational safety. The drive of the cable car was controlled by a manual switchboard in the station located on the top level of the fortress. From there, the engineer had a limited view of the top half on the track, and used a combat telephone for communication along the track.
