Surfaces: Two-and-a-Half Dimensions

Confocal microscopes generate data in three dimensions; the challenge to the user is to maximize the useful information we can extract from this data. Running through a stack as a movie can be valuable, but it is difficult to comprehend our sample as a three-dimensional object from such a view. We need to find a way to present the data so that our brain can interpret it as an entity, not as a collection of slices.
