Preparative layer (planar) chromatography (PLC) can be defined as a liquid chromatographic technique in which the solvent-solvent composition migrates through a stationary phase either by capillary action or under the influence of forced flow, with the objective of separating and isolating compounds in interest in 10 to 1000 mg quantities for further studies such as for structure elucidation by IR, UV, MS (combined with GC, HPLC, or TLC), NMR (1H, 13C, 32P, or any other as required), CD, etc., for any other analytical purposes, as well as for the determination of biological activity.
