Natural pigments are normally small, colored, organic molecules belonging to a limited number of major structural types. The first compounds to be separated by chromatography were in fact such natural pigments: the separations were carried out on open tubular columns whose appearance after development led to the term chromatography from the Greek words “khromatos” and “graphos” to provide the meaning “colored writing.” Further details may be found in Chapter 1 of this book. The present chapter thus follows directly the original meaning of chromatography although the compounds involved and the separations achieved are beyond the wildest dreams of the original workers.
