ABSTRACT

The invention of chromatography can be traced to the milestone paper published in 1906 by the Russian botanist and plant physiologist Mikhail Semyonovitch Tswett (1872-1919) [1,2]. In the experiments reported in this paper, Tswett separated chloroplast pigments from leaves in a column of precipitated chalk washed with carbon disulfide mobile phase. During the 20th century and in the new millennium, chromatography has become an indispensable separation tool that is very widely used in natural and life science laboratories throughout the world.
