ABSTRACT

The previous chapters discuss XML and the semantic Web, providing an overview of the various constructs in XML as well as giving some idea of what the semantic Web is all about. Part I of this book mentions various technologies that have been influenced by, and have influenced, the development of XML. Most prominent among these technologies are databases. Although data management has affected the developments of XML a great deal, a special type of database systems, called semistructured database systems, inspired the development of XML in the beginning. XML was considered to be the model for semistructured databases. Therefore, I give a special place in this book to semistructured databases and cover it in Part II as an aspect of XML. Part III discusses applications of XML; many of the technologies discussed in Part I are examined again, including databases, e-commerce, information management, and information retrieval.
