ABSTRACT

Much of the focus in this book has been on databases and how XML relates to them. Part I covers Web databases; and Part II studies semistructured databases, which is a type of database system. Appendix B provides an overview of data management. This chapter examines various aspects of data management and their relationships to XML, although with some repetition because data management has been discussed earlier in many of the chapters. Data management, however, has been a key component to the development of XML and, therefore, without data management and the Web it is very likely that we may not have made such great progress with XML. Basically, this chapter consolidates much of the discussions in the previous chapters and focuses on all aspects of XML related to data management.
