The term acute energy deprivation syndromes was coined by Cavanagh to describe a set of neuropathological disorders of energy metabolism. These disorders, which disrupt mitochondrial bioenergetics, lead to a remarkable array of neuropathological disorders. Several reviews have

focused on clinical and biochemical aspects of mitochondrial encephalopathies in recent years.1,2 The precise mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of these regions have yet to be determined. However, it is generally agreed that disruption of energy metabolism through genetic deficiencies, dietary cofactor insufficiencies, or toxicant-induced dysfunction can cause coincident injury in the auditory and vestibular centers of the mammalian brain.
