ABSTRACT

Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury manifested by pain at the medial tubercle of the calcaneus and/or along the medial longitudinal arch. It usually develops when repetitive and prolonged stress is placed on the plantar fascia, which may cause microtears and inflammation in the fascia at or near its insertion on the calcaneus, i.e., when the activity of mechanical force overbalances the healing capacity of the tissue. Plantar fasciitis was first described by Wood in 1812, and its development was erroneously attributed to complications of tuberculosis.
