Field Extensions and Kronecker’s Theorem

Consider the polynomial x2+1 ∈ R[x]. This polynomial clearly has no roots in R, but we know that there exists a larger field-namely, C-in which this polynomial does have roots. In this chapter we develop a general method for constructing bigger fields, with the aim of being able to further factor polynomials.
