ABSTRACT

In this book, a systematic approach to the analysis of binary response data has been presented. In order to implement this approach, computer software for fitting linear logistic models, and models based on the probit or complementary log-log transformation of the response probability, will be essential. Accordingly, this chapter begins with a brief summary of the facilities for modelling binary data that are included in a number of well-known and widely used statistical packages, namely GenStat, GLIM, SAS, S-PLUS, SPSS, and Stata. Throughout this chapter, the discussion is based on the versions of each package available to the author at the time of writing, namely the fifth edition of GenStat for Windows, Release 4 of GLIM, Release 8.2 of SAS, version 6 of S-PLUS, version 11 of SPSS and version 7 of Stata. There are of course facilities for binary data analysis in many other packages, but details will not be given here.
