Elastic materials are those for which stress is proportional to strain. A typical example of elastic behavior is provided by the ideal spring for which force (stress) is proportional to displacement (strain). The ideal spring (Fig. 5.1.1) can be used to model the general behavior of elastic materials in the following way.
