Open-celled paving grids are blocks or slabs containing openings that penetrate their entire thickness. They differ from open-jointed blocks in that the porous area is in the cells cast within each unit in addition to any open space in the joints between units. The grids are made of concrete or brick. Most come as premanufactured units; one model is formed by casting concrete in place. Their applications have previously been reviewed by Nichols (1995), Sipes and Roberts (1994), and Southerland (1984).
