Called rempah (Malaysian/Indonesian), beharat (Arabic), besamim (Hebrew), epices (French), kruen tet (Thai), masala (Hindi), specie (Italian), especerias (Spanish), sheng liu (Mandarin), specerjien (Dutch), krooder (Norwegian), or kimem (Ethiopian), spices have been savored and sought around the world from the earliest times because of their diverse functions.
