ABSTRACT

Addressing usability as part of the design of a medical product logically requires detailed study of relevant real-world tasks for which the product will be used. In order to study the tasks, it is necessary to observe them, and it helps enormously to videotape them for further review. However, the tasks in question are sometimes very lengthy. Videotaping and reviewing, say, six hours of open-heart surgery for each case can be a daunting and inefficient form of research.
