ABSTRACT

Pollution of air, water, soil, and food respects no geographic boundaries. For instance, untreated chemical waste released into a river will eventually add to the pollution load of the ocean receiving the river’s outfl ow. Ocean currents will distribute what began as local pollution throughout the planet. In the course of pollution migration, contaminants can cross international boundaries. How cross-boundary pollution is prevented or otherwise managed can therefore require the involvement of regional (e.g., European Union) and global (e.g., United Nations [UN]) agencies. This involvement often includes technical assistance and support.
