ABSTRACT

Biomechanics is a science dealing with equilibria and human motions; it studies the mechanical properties of tissues, organs, and systems, as well as the mechanical motion of living organisms and its causes and results. There are external (e.g. gravity) and internal (e.g. muscle) forces that cause body motion. As a result of these forces, the position of a body (one’s own body or foreign bodies) changes or body deformation occurs. The name ‘biomechanics’ is derived from the Greek word mechana, which means tool. The sufx ‘bio-’ indicates that this science concerns living organisms.
