ABSTRACT
The Industrial Revolution, which took place in the nineteenth century, depended on the development of more effective and all-purpose machines. New sources of power such as steam and electric engines paved the way for more advanced technological procedures. Higher productivity and better work quality were accompanied by new, unknown hazards. Bigger and faster machine elements posed greater hazards. The effective protection of machine operators without affecting their productivity therefore became crucial.
