Most medical imaging seeks to noninvasively resolve the internal anatomy of the body, its organs, and cells. ere are a number of dierent modalities used in noninvasive medical imaging, each with its own advantages and disadvantages (Northrop, 2002). e etymology of the word tomography comes from the Greek tomos, which means a cut or slice, and “-raphy” from the Greek graphein, to write. Dierent tomographic algorithms have been applied to a number of imaging modalities in order to reconstruct images of internal “slices” of body parts: the brain, lungs, intestines, skeletal structures, etc. e slices can then be stacked to produce high-resolution, three-dimensional (3-D) images, characterized by volume elements called voxels.
