Assessing materials to determine if they can act as delayed contact dermal sensitizers in humans is different on a number of grounds from the other tests we have looked at so far and, indeed, from most of the other test systems presented later in this book. These differences all stem from how the immune system, which is the mechanistic basis for this set of adverse responses, functions.
