ABSTRACT
Recognition of the importance of acute tests in the overall scheme of things has recently caused more attention to be paid to their performance and results, leading to both better day-to-day performance of the tests and closer scrutiny of their designs. At the same time, increased concern as to both reducing the numbers of animals used in research and testing and ensuring the use of humane methods in such testing has created additional reasons for critical review of study design and conduct.
