ABSTRACT
Its chemical nomenclature is 2,3-dimercaptopropanol, also known as BAL or British Antilewsite.
Dimercaprol antagonizes the biological actions of metals that form mercaptides with essential sulfhydryl groups, such as arsenic and mercury. Poisoning by selenites, which oxidize sulfhydryl enzymes, is not influenced by dimercaprol.
