ABSTRACT
Carbon monoxide is produced in vivo by catabolism of the a-methane carbon atom in the protoporphyrin ring of hemoglobin. Endogenous CO forms carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) of 0.4-0.7%. Smoking one pack of cig arettes per day produces 5-6% COHb (Stewart, 1975).
