ABSTRACT
The goal of this chapter is to introduce the reader to finite element analysis which is the basis for the discussion of the computational methods in the remainder of the book. This chapter first focuses on the computational fundamentals of the method in connection with a simple boundary value problem. These fundamentals will be expanded with the derivation of a practical finite element and further when dealing with the application of the technique for mechanical systems in Chapter 3.
