ABSTRACT

The sustained economic growth worldwide during the past two decades has shown the benefits of globalization. Although it must be admitted that much more could have been achieved if more progress on the Doha Development Agenda on trade had been made. However, the current lower growth worldwide, rising unemployment, and deflating asset values may trigger nationalism, excessive self-interest, and protectionism. We need more responsibility for fairer world trade to avoid globalization that enriches a few beyond belief and excludes most of the population. Trade responsibility also means accepting special and differential treatment for developing countries and giving them temporary trade protection so they may protect themselves from food import surges.
