ABSTRACT

These three major elements are combined in green plants in the process called photosynthesis:

Carbon dioxide (6CO2) + Water (6H2O)

↓ (in the presence of light and chlorophyll)

↓ Carbohydrate (C6H12O6) + Oxygen (O2)

that is, the conversion of light energy to chemical energy. For active photosynthesis to take place, the

• Plant must be fully turgid (not under water stress. • Stomata must be open, which enhances gaseous exchange so that CO2 can

readily enter plant leaves. • Leaf surface must be exposed to full sunlight. • Plant must be nutritionally sound.
