ABSTRACT

The ƒrst major soilless mix formulations were the Cornell Soilless PeatLite Mixes, a product of research and development by researchers at Cornell University. They developed three organic soilless mixes based on the combination of sphagnum peat with the other major ingredient being either vermiculite or perlite:

For the short-term growth of plants, additional mixes were developed by researchers in California and Canada, both mixes using sphagnum peat moss as the major ingredient:

All these mixes were primarily used for either the germination of plants from seed, seedling production, or the short-term growth of ornamental plants. For long-term growth, these mixes will require nutrient element supplementation, the kind, amount, and frequency of application determined by the growth requirement of the plants.
