ABSTRACT

ABST R AC T The objective of this paper is to present a new methodology that is able to generate, screen and then identify sustainable alternatives in chemical process operating in continuous or batch operational models by locating the operational, environmental, economical, and safety related bottlenecks inherent to the process. The methodology is able to analyze a wide range of processes that operate in continuous mode, in semi-continuous and/or in batch mode. The main steps of the methodology are described, highlighting the main differences between continuous and batch processes. The software, SustainPro, has been further developed to include the latest features of the indicator-based methodology. Through a case study involving a batch-process, the important features of the methodology and the corresponding software are illustrated together with the obtained sustainable process design.
