ABSTRACT

Introduction This chapter is a departure from traditional treatments of the design process. Project management (Lewis, 2005) is viewed by many as something separate from the design process. Our view is that the process of organizing and coordinating the effort of a design team is intrinsic to the design process itself. In addition to developing a systems view of the product or service you are developing, we encourage you to develop a systems view of the tasks needed to develop that system. As we shall see, there is a natural linkage between these two views. We have therefore included project management in the Getting Design Right process under the step called “execute the design.” Our goal is to deliver on the commitment contained in the mission statement.
