Toxic Effects on Membrane Structure and Function

The preceding chapter described the presence in membranes of many more-or-less specific and reactive proteins and other macromolecules; further, membranes were shown to play critical roles in many essential cell processes. It is not surprising, there fore, to find that cell membranes often provide the target sites for toxic xenobiotics. This chapter deals with the nature of structural and functional membrane lesions resulting directly or indirectly from actions of toxic agents.
