ABSTRACT

Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) is the dried residue remaining after the starch fraction of corn is fermented using selected yeasts and enzymes to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide. After complete fermentation, the alcohol is removed by distillation and the remaining fermentation residues are dried. The starch in corn is consumed in the fermentation process, while other nutrients such as protein are concentrated as much as threefold during production of DDGS (William, Horn, and Rugala 1977). Reddy, Stoker, and Roger (1993) incorporated DDGS on a 50-50 weight basis with wheat —our in preparation of noodles and baked foods. It is also known that up to 20% DDGS in a product signi•cantly improved the —avor of extruded product for companion animals (Wampler and Gould 1984). The utilization of DDGS as a source of protein, fat, and •ber needs further exploration in preparation of pet foods and aquaculture feeds. Being a rich source of protein, DDGS can open newer and extremely pro•table avenues for the pet food industry if proven bene•cial in terms of health and foods’ physical qualities.
