ABSTRACT

My wife and I started our careers as shark researchers in the Bimini Islands situated in the commonwealth of the Bahamas. Our research work focused on the breeding and navigational behaviors of lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris). During our time of research, we learned a lot of interesting facts about sharks. For example, sharks need to keep on swimming to stay alive, sharks cannot swim backward, and sharks-like most toothed fishes-are polyphyodonts. A polyphyodont is an organism whose teeth are continuously being replaced. In fact, in the case of sharks, the teeth are modified placoid dermal scales, and the older rows of teeth are replaced by newer ones continuously throughout the life of the shark.
