ABSTRACT

Reuben, our son, and I like to play video games. The genre that we play most often is adventure games with built-in puzzles. The Lego series of games such as Indiana Jones, Batman, Star Wars, etc., is one of our favorites. These games not only have an adventurous story line true to their blockbuster movie scripts, but there are many mini-games, bonus levels, and puzzles and challenges that we enjoy. Some of these challenges are quite puzzling and require careful attention and thought to solve them. Reuben and I play these games together, and what I learned quickly was that when we played these games together, we were able to intelligently solve the puzzles in a relatively shorter time. At times, my adult brain would try to overanalyze the problem when

the solution was staring right in my face, and our muchloved son would innately identify and point out; and at other times, I helped him solve some advanced and complex problems, which he did not immediately perceive. Playing solo, we would take more time to solve the problem, sometimes failing to solve the puzzle and complete the game. However, when we played together as a team, we always succeeded, leveraging each other’s intelligence and aptitude.
