ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2 we looked at the Steps to Automation, where we needed to discover

the appropriate process that was to be implemented by the automation machinery

yet to be designed. These steps helped to establish the best way to do something,

but not how the machine should be configured. One could envision a totally novel

machine configuration to solve such a problem, but this is a great undertaking. It

may be better to first look at commonly found configurations, and investigate the

best available choices before becoming very creative. There are many com-

ponents of these commonly found layouts that are readily available, and should

be more cost-effective and timelier compared to starting from scratch.
