ABSTRACT
Throughout their lifetime, the cells of living plants continue to divide with the production of certain cells, thus conferring the unusual property of being able to grow indefinitely while retaining the quality of young plants. These meristematic cells and those deriving from them grow and then differentiate into specialized cells for various functions, support, protection, flow of sap, etc. A collection of cells specialized for one function constitutes a tissue.
