The mobile WiMAX version represents the future of the wireless metropolitan networking as it combines mobile and fixed broadband networks while addressing mobility, guaranteeing high data rates, supporting advanced applications, and enhancing the provided quality of service (QoS). This chapter intends to address the handoff management in WiMAX networks; it aims at demonstrating howwill theWiMAX handoff process offer services continuity while providing enhancedQoS guarantees and preserving security to meet the subscriber demands. First, we will survey the mobility management concepts. Second, we will study the mobile WiMAX physical and MAC layers specifications while presenting the end-to-end WiMAX architecture. Third, we will detail the WiMAX handoff management by presenting the supported architecture, then detail the functional decomposition adopted by this architecture and address the supported handoff schemes. Next, we will give an overview of the handoff control while specifying the adopted handoff monitoring functions and the different parameters that should be taken into account to optimize the handoff operation. After that, we will address the heterogeneous handoff by presenting the IEEE 802.21 standard, then show how mobile WiMAX can be interoperable with other mobile networking technologies. Finally, we will survey the different mechanisms implemented to guarantee security during handoff.
