ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the work of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to standardize broadband over power lines (BPL) technologies and provides a brief discussion of other standards and the work of several organizing bodies that can be expected to affect the manufacture of BPL equipment and their operational capability. Similar to other IEEE projects intended to develop standards, the P1675 effort involves a series of project meetings that can be expected to result in the development of a standard. The IEEE BPL study group’s next meeting occurred October 13, 2004. This meeting had several primary goals. The January 14, 2005, IEEE BPL study group meeting took place at the Marriot Del Mar hotel in San Diego, California. The HomePlug Powerline Alliance represents a group or alliance of organizations involved in each level of the value chain, from services and content to retail, hardware, software, silicon, and technology.
