ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The skin is the largest organ of our body and the boundary to the environment. Analysis of skin structure is essential for dermatological diagnoses and therapy control, as well as for the investigation of cosmetic products. In recent years, laser scanning microscopy (LSM) has achieved substantial improvements in the imaging of dermal tissue in vivo. Nowadays, laser microscopic systems on the open market are either significantly reduced in size or are fiber-based with handheld scanning devices, allowing a simple in vivo application and evaluation of the skin on any region of the body (1-5).
