ABSTRACT

Neurotoxicology may be defined as the study of the adverse effects of chemicals on the structure and function of the nervous system. The subject matter includes chemical events at subcellular levels of the nervous system all the way to the study of chemical effects on the complex behavioral interactions of human organisms with their environment and with each other. Many chemicals have been shown to affect the nervous system. For example, psychotherapeutic drugs have been designed specifically for their effects on the brain. Although we do not usually think of such drugs as neurotoxicants, clearly these drugs can produce toxic "side effects" on the nervous system that can be defined as adverse effects.
