ABSTRACT

This chapter presents important aspects of Preventive maintenance (PM). PM is an important component of a maintenance activity. PM may be described as the care and servicing by individuals involved with maintenance to keep equipment/facilities in satisfactory operational state by providing for systematic inspection, detection, and correction of incipient failures either prior to their occurrence or prior to their development into major failure. The model is developed on the premise that the facility/equipment under repair lead to zero output, thus less profit. Furthermore, if equipment is inspected too often, there is danger that it may be more costly due to factors such as loss of production, cost of materials, and wages than losses due to breakdowns. Mean Preventive Maintenance Time is the average item/equipment downtime needed to conduct scheduled PM.
